About

The Church of the Holy City Wedding Chapel is a religious wedding venue in the Washington, D.C. area. This historically elegant chapel rises up like a grand stone castle with wooden pews and stained glass windows inside. Couples can find this wedding venue a five-minute drive from The White House in downtown Washington, D.C.

Facilities and Capacity

At this chapel, couples can celebrate their big day with up to 360 guests. The main hall of the Church of the Holy City Wedding Chapel, called the Sanctuary, seats the maximum number of guests for the wedding. The wooden pews feature ornately carved details and sit on either side of a red runner leading to the altar. The ceilings stretch high overhead, supported by wooden beams, and on the walls stained glass windows depicting religious anecdotes climb to meet them. Stone walls glow in the warm soft lighting of the overhead pendant light fixtures. A pipe organ is built into the wall near the front of the room. The building also has a small vintage library, a bright and open parlor, and a foyer connecting both rooms to the Sanctuary. There is a second-level to this historic chapel accessible by a winding stone and brick staircase. The Upstairs Chapel is a small bright room with windows of clear glass and a wooden cathedral ceiling. It can serve as a venue for ceremonies or receptions. The downstairs Dining Hall is the perfect location for a reception as well.

Services Offered

Couples can host their ceremony and reception for up to 100 persons together in this historic wedding venue. Outside vendors are permitted at this venue to allow couples to decorate, dine, and celebrate in the style of their choosing. The church welcomes couples of all faiths to host their wedding on its grounds.

History

This English Gothic Sanctuary was designed by H. Langford Warren. The architect of the chapel was a Swedenborgian and was also the Dean of Harvard’s School of Architecture. The church was one of the country’s first to welcome the marriages of couples of different races. In the 1970s the church opened its doors to marriages of couples with different faiths. Then, in the 2000s, it was one of the first churches to welcome couples in same-sex marriages, before this was legalized by the Supreme Court.

Beautiful church!

We were very happy with having our wedding here! We did a more non traditional ceremony and Jimmy was open to that. We had a guitarist which sounded beautiful in the church. The sound traveled well as we spoke without microphones which was a plus!
There are so many different photo opportunities inside and outside of the church that will definitely make our wedding photos turn out PHENOMENAL! We could have stayed there all day because there were so many spots with great lighting and backdrops!

Wonderful church

Like many other 2020 brides, COVID put a wrench in our original plans and we had to scrap our first wedding. I am so happy I was able to find Church of the Holy City and that they had availability on our original date. I worked with James, the church events coordinator, to ensure everything ran smoothly and he was a joy to work with. He opened the church for us for our Rehearsal and extra early on the wedding day so our vendors had plenty of time to set up. The church is actually listed in Washington DCs most beautiful churches and there's a reason for that, it's breathtaking! The stained glass and high ceilings make for a great backdrop to any wedding!

The perfect wedding venue.

We spent months searching for the perfect wedding venue for our simply elegant ceremony. When we read the history of this beautiful church, we decided to change venues. We knew this was the venue for our celebration of love. We reached out within weeks of our date, and we were welcomed with such thoughtfulness, professionalism, and support. James was a lifesaver in so many ways. We had a few unexpected bumps on the day of, and thanks to James, everything was perfect in the end.
The beautiful architecture of the church is breathtaking. The church was perfect for our intimate service.
From the first email communication to the end of the service, Elfa and James were there for us. They walked the entire planning process with us, and provided resources, information, words of encouragement, and even assisted with last minute wardrobe complications.
We are hoping to be able to use the venue again for our first wedding anniversary photo shoot!
We are forever grateful for Elfa, James, and The Church of The Holy City.

The Church of the Holy City (isn't that a beautiful name? Who wouldn't want to get married under that banner?!) is EXACTLY what you think an elegant church ought to look like for a church wedding. It is also in a perfect location, within easy reach of many of Washington's top venues and monumental core. You will find the staff to be extraordinarily attentive and on tope of everything. A wonderful choice.
