These iconic spaces can often accommodate weddings of a variety of sizes, and the unique exhibits provide built-in décor and memorable activities for your special day.

Museum Weddings in NYC: A Range of Venue Options

When we hear the word "museum", we often think of the fine arts. While it is true that art connoisseurs will especially love saying "I do" during an art-focused NYC museum wedding, the venue options are infinite. Not only do museum weddings in NYC have the fine arts well-represented, but you’ll also find themed locations that feature science, history, and even entertainment genres for movie- or music-loving couples.

Attending a private museum event offers the opportunity to get up close and personal with the exhibits on your wedding day, which results in a completely different experience than browsing crowded galleries with the general public on other days.

Museum venues range from historic buildings to modern, open-air spaces. Museum weddings in NYC can be anything from small, intimate events, to full-blown, large-scale affairs. You may find it helpful to have some sense of how large your guest list will be before narrowing down your search for the right NYC museum wedding venue.

NYC Museum Weddings: Arranging the Perfect Day

While museums and galleries can be ideal locations for a wedding, they also come with their own set of challenges. For one thing, they might not allow you to hold your ceremony onsite – which can lead to concerns about wedding transportation (and traffic!) between the ceremony and reception. And, unlike some other venues, you’ll need to work around a museum’s current installations and permanent fixtures for everything from seating arrangements, to decorations, to where to place the dance floor.

That said, museum weddings in NYC can be incredibly beautiful, romantic and unique. There’s nothing quite like tying the knot under your favorite piece of art, next to an interesting scientific artifact or in a gorgeous building that displays the history of the surrounding city where you fell in love.

If you have guests who don’t like to dance (and, let’s face it, doesn’t everyone?), a NYC museum wedding will provide alternative entertainment. You can also consider providing a photo booth to give wedding guests an additional activity to do during the reception.

While you probably won’t have to worry too much about extra decorations other than flowers, custom wedding signage always adds a nice – and helpful – touch to a museum’s natural ambiance.

Other Things to Consider for Your NYC Museum Wedding

While some NYC museum wedding venues provide in-house event planners and all-inclusive packages, others ask couples to bring in all of their own vendors including catering, tables, chairs and linens. While this can result in additional coordination for you, it also allows for greater possibilities and even has the potential to save some money. After all, even though museum weddings in NYC can be fabulous – they certainly don’t come cheap.
