History
Founded by Sir Tyrone Guthrie in 1963, Hamlet was the first production that took place at the theater. Guthrie wanted to create a new type of theater that was in contrast to the commercial setting of Broadway. Being in the heartland of America, Guthrie along with his two colleagues, Oliver Rea and Peter Zeisler, believed that Minneapolis was the perfect city to do so.
