History
It is believed that the home was constructed in about 1840. It was a modest overseer’s dwelling and the property was part of Old Town, which was a sea-island cotton plantation. The Legare family owned the property starting in 1878. When a caretaker was taking care of the property, it became damaged and the outdoor area was full of tangled vines and weeds. Then, Ferdinanda Backer, known as “Ferdi,” made it her mission to repair the home. In the 1940s, she, alongside her husband, remodeled the old house in the Colonial Revival style. She also installed the live-oak avenue that leads to the house and created 80 acres of beautiful gardens.

This venue is so stunning, my wedding party and guests were gasping when they first laid eyes on it (and so did I)! I got comments all night on how my venue was the most beautiful people had ever ... Read more seen, even though it poured rain on my wedding day. Even better, the staff is friendly, experienced, and available for any questions. I did not have any problems at all! The only thing that would be good to know about Legare beforehand is that it is a "bare-bones" venue that requires a wedding planner: there is no in-house catering, no chairs/tables, etc so you have to outsource everything. However, if you are looking for a jaw-dropping venue with the flexibility to choose all your own vendors, I would look no further than LWH!
