When to Go

It all depends on what you’re hoping to experience for your first vacation as a married couple. For the most quintessential—and busy!—time to see Lapland, visit in late November, when the snow is at its peak. This season runs through December, especially around the holiday season. If you visit during these few months, remember the sun is only out a few hours a day, which can be a strange transition for most. From January to March, you’ll see more blue skies, deep snow piles and plenty of winter sport opportunities. In September and October, there is less snow, but more chances to catch a glimpse of the legendary—and breathtaking—Northern Lights.

Top Sights and Activities

Bundle up and get ready to trek through snow as you continuously stop in awe of Mother Nature. From ice hotels and adventure sports, here’s how to fill your honeymoon with endless wonder.

  • Snowman World or Snow Village: Depending on which region you decide to stay in, you can choose from various ‘ice hotels’, which as the name suggests—are made of ice! While in Rovaniemi, stay at Snowman World or if you’re in Kittila, book a night at Snow Village. These are created each year, and often feature a dozen rooms, a bar, a restaurant and plenty of art.
  • Rent a Snowmobile: When you visit during winter, you’ll definitely want to spend a day (or three) touring around the area in a snowmobile. It’s the prefered mode of transportation by locals, so you might even encounter some traffic along the way. If you have extra time, you can even check off more countries on your must-see list, by snowmobiling your way to Norway or Sweden.
  • Go Skiing: Even if you’re not an experienced snow bunny, when you’re in Lapland, there’s no better time to test your chops. You can choose from countless ones, but if you end up at Yllas, consider renting your own sauna gondola in the middle of the snow to warm-up afterwards. From there, you can eat dinner, go in the jacuzzi or snuggle up with your new Mrs. or Mr.
  • See the Northern Lights: There are only 200 nights a year—from August to April—to see one of the most beautiful, natural occurrences in the world. If you book your honeymoon during this time, give yourself a few nights to up your odds of seeing the colorful performance in the sky, since it only happens on clear nights.
  • Rovaniemi, or the hometown of Santa Claus: Even if you’re not a child, this is a must-see if you’re making your way to Lapland in the winter. You’ll find everything from the post office to a theme park, and of course, the man himself.
  • Rauna Zoo: While you’re visiting, make a stop at the northernmost zoo in the world, offering a rare glimpse and interaction with 50 arctic species. These include brown bears, wolves, polar bears, moose and deer.
  • Reindeer Rides: Where else are you going to ride on a real reindeer that natives actually use to get around? They are so common in Lapland that they almost outnumber residents. Saddle up with your number one and experience the joy of a sleigh ride or gallop.
