When to Go on Honeymoon on the West Coast

The West Coast is notorious for its finicky weather, which is why visiting during the summer months is your best best. From June through September, you’ll deal with less rain and gloomy days, making for a more sunny, cheerful trip. But if you’re just heading to California — Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, Los Angeles, and San Diego, especially — you’ll find comfortable weather year-round.

Where to Go On Your West Coast Honeymoon

seattle washington

Seattle, Washington

If it’s your first time visiting this honeymoon destination in the Western U.S., then Pike Place Market is a must-visit. Here, you’ll get a taste of the city’s finest cuisine while taking in a stunning view of the Elliot Bay waterfront. While you’re crossing off the major tourist sites, take a ride up 520 feet to the top of the Space Needle where you can get a 360 view of Seattle. For a different perspective, head across the city to Sky View Observatory to see the Space Needle — and the rest of the city— from 902 feet above ground.  To get from one destination to the next (a.k.a. one Starbucks to the next), hop on a Washington State Ferry for a peaceful, easy commute in an around Seattle. When you think of Seattle, you might not think of food — until you try a Seattle Dog, a hot dog topped with grilled onions and cream cheese on a lightly toasted bun.
Must See: If you have plans to travel to Oregon or California, make a stop at Mount Rainier National Park, which is just two hours south of Seattle.

portland oregon

Portland, Oregon

This northwestern West Coast honeymoon destination is known for its natural beauty, which is why a stop a stop at the Portland Japanese Garden is an absolute must. After you clear your mind in the meditation gardens, immerse yourself in the Japanese culture with a tea tasting at the garden’s Umami Café. If you’re visiting from April through October, check out over 10,000 roses in Washington Park’s International Rose Test Garden. Portland is called the City of Roses, after all. Literature and history buffs will enjoy Pittock Mansion, the  French Renaissance-style home of publisher Henry Pittock. Once the sun sets (or the rain rolls in), drink a cold one while enjoying the latest blockbuster at Bagdad Theater & Pub.
Must See: Two words: Voodoo Doughnut. Start your day with a sugar-high thanks to the shop’s cereal or cookie-covered creations.

napa california

Napa, California

If you’re a wine lover — or hey, an occasional wine drinker — Napa is the be-all, end-all for vino fresh from the vine. There’s a bounty of local wineries to choose from, ranging from the rustic-chic feel at Sequoia Grove Winery to the ornate Trefethen Family Vineyards. Dig deeper — literally — into the area’s history and culture with a visit to Jarvis Estate, where you can also tour 45,000 square feet of cave tunneled into the scenic Vaca Mountains … before drinking a few glasses of Merlot. Or if you’re really feeling adventurous, take a hot air balloon ride around the area to get a full view of all the local grapes at this honeymoon destination in the Western U.S.
Must See: Grab a glass of bubbly and sit on the outdoor terrace of Domaine Carneros for an ultra-romantic day.

santa catalina california

Santa Catalina Island, California

Just a ferry ride away from southern California, you’ll find yourself in paradise — but actually. Catalina, one of California’s Channel Islands, has a wealth of wildlife, water activities, and well, Insta-worthy moments. Since you’re on your honeymoon and all, spend a day snorkeling in Lover’s Cove. But if you’re a fan of solid ground (we get it), Trans-Catalina Trail offers more than 38 miles of hiking opportunities, perfect for quick jaunts or full day excursions. Escape the heat by wining and dining at Catalina Island Casino Ballroom, a gathering — not gambling — place built in 1929. Here, you can take a behind-the-scenes tour to get up close and personal with the Art Deco icon, attend a festival or concert in the lavish ballroom, or check out a film at “the first theater built for talkies.” Top tip: If you visit on a Friday or Saturday night,  you can listen to a performance on the theater’s original pipe organ an hour before the movie starts.
Must See: Spend an afternoon on a glass bottom boat to get a closer look of the marine life surrounding the island.

Sample West Coast Honeymoon Itinerary

  • Start things off with a cup of Seattle’s own Starbucks coffee in the Emerald City.
  • On your three-hour drive to Portland, make a pit stop in Mount Rainier to get a glimpse of Washington state in all of its glory.
  • Unless you want to spend nine hours in the car with your S.O., hop on a short flight to Napa because, well, wine.
  • Finally, get your sunshine fix with a relaxing jaunt to Catalina Island.
