    Excellent Venue

    We had our wedding party (we were married with our family a few months earlier, but did a big party to celebrate with family and friends) in January. It was super easy to work with the Freight Shed team, and the event space is just lovely. We got in early in the am, got to decorate and it looked fantastic. My two issues were things we knew of in advance as I am the second member of the family to have a wedding-related event here. :) The bathrooms being outside/apart from the space and we wish there was a small closet for coats. Since out party was January, everyone had jackets and the short walk to the bathrooms was just a bit brisk.

    Either way, it was beautiful and easy and turns out my sister and her fiance liked the venue so much, we are going to be back there for their wedding this September!!

    This venue had everything we wanted for our dream wedding. The people there were SO helpful and answered all of our questions about measurements or tables, Absolutely beautiful venue!!

    Having our wedding at the Yorktown Freight Shed was a dream come true! For those of you who are familiar with his historic site it books up almost 2 years in advance. I was lucky enough to have placed my deposit during their "old" contract where the base fee was $600 for 3 hours + 1 hour of prep+1 hour of cleanup with any additional event hours at $125/hour. Since my deposit in 2012, they have raised their rates to a base of fee of $1000. We originally were going to marry at the Mariner's Museum in Newport News VA but ended up changing our wedding date due to a cross-country move for my new job. Since we were now searching for a date in spring of 2013 versus fall of 2012 the Freight Shed was able to accommodate us for 4/20/13. We worked very closely with Sherman and Jonathan-the managers of the Freight Shed. Every little question I had, they were able to provide a prompt answer either by email or by phone.

    Our wedding was a morning ceremony with a brunch reception and it required my family and friends to arrive earlier than normal to help set up and decorate. Jonathan (a true angel in disguise) allowed us to set up much earlier than originally agreed upon at no additional charge! He even had the cleaning crew complete their job sooner than normal as well. Normally, the Freight Shed doesn't open until 10am for events with ability to start setup no sooner than 9:30am. With Jonathan's help my family and friends were able to enter the Freight Shed an hour and half earlier than normal. What a TIME-SAVER it was for us! In addition to the amazing service from Jonathan and Sherman I can't forget to mention how sweet Renata was as well. She handles all of the financial side of the Freight Shed such as payments and deposit refunds. She answered many of my questions as well and if she couldn't she would always get me in touch with Jonathan whenever needed. Renata is an absolute sweetheart and a joy to work with as well. Thank you for such a wonderful day!!!

    This venue is amazing. I originally wanted to get married on a historic plantation, however after looking at the cost of most of them I thought I was going to have to settle on a hotel ballroom. After I saw photos of the freight shed online, and saw that the price was so reasonable, I wanted to see it in person to see what this place might be missing. It is even more gorgeous in person. The views of the river are amazing, all the historic homes and buildings surrounding it are gorgeous. In the summertime, they even include a tent for the brick plaza for free. I loved the fact that they allow you to use any vendor as well. I definitely recommend!

    I fell in love with the Freight Shed as soon as I saw it and booked in 15 months in advance. Ya can't beat the price, the space is plentiful for weddings under about 120 people and the view is STUNNING!!! Sherman, the contact person I worked with was great. Quick to answer emails and phone calls. Thanks!!

    I absolutely LOVED having our wedding at the Yorktown Freight Shed. The view is gorgeous, right on the Yorktown River (next to the beach), and you can get some great sunset pictures. You can either have your ceremony on the patio under the tent (our option), or you can have it in the grass on the other side of the building. The price was really cheap considering how much you get - They include the freight shed itself (the brick building) as well as the outdoor brick patio in the back, the tent over the patio, and all of the tables and chairs. I believe I paid about $1,500 for all of that, and we started setting up early in the morning and had the venue until 11pm. With this venue, you're also not restricted to having a certain kind of food. You can hire your own caterer and bring your own alcohol, so that helps with the cost as well. I hired Smokin' Joe's - Southern Brides on a Budget to do our catering, wedding planning, and decorating, so between the Freight Shed and Southern Brides on a Budget, we were all taken care of. Right after my wedding, a friend of mine that had recently got engaged asked if she could have her wedding there and use the same caterer! So I knew it must have been as awesome to everyone else as it was to us. I was extremely happy with our decision :)

    The Freight Shed was the perfect place for our wedding. We lucked out with weather, and everyone couldn't get over how beautiful the location was. The staff was very responsive and easy to work with. I recommend using The Freight Shed for your wedding location.

    Henry and Sherman were great to work with. I think moving some of the tables, etc to the tent provided by the Freight Shed, should be allowed.

    The only downside to this venue is the Yorktown Police. There isn't any convenient, temporary parking to unload extremely heavy items, so we pulled up on the brick sidewalk and were harassed incessantly by the police. Also, they lay in wait for people to leave the reception to arrest them for drunk in public, even though people were walking from the Freight Shed to the hotel across the street, so they wouldn't have to drive.

    We used The Freight Shed for my daughter's wedding in Oct. We loved working with them and couldn't believe how quickly they would respond to our emails answering all our questions. Would love to do business with them again!

    Beautiful venue right on the water. We had the ceremony and dancing under the tent and dinner in the venue. I would suggest using up-lighting inside AND outside. It was the perfect place for us!

    Loved this venue for my wedding. It was all I could ask for the history the beauty. Only warning is the tent floods if it rains and leaks. Beside that it is perfect. My wedding pictures are gorgeous. Just beware if you chose to put your guests up and the duke of York. Very unprofessional. Besides that everything there is wonderful. Hopefully I can throw another party here one day!

    We loved our venue. It's a beautiful area and a unique building. The value is amazing--you get the building AND the tent over the patio area directly behind for much less than any other place we visited. A lot of furniture was also included, though none of it can be taken outside, so we did have to rent some pieces to go under the tent. Because this is a historical, government-owned building, you need to be willing to bend to the many rules/restrictions they have. Also, the bathroom is a short distance away outside. If these things do not bother you (it's beautiful down there and the price is fantastic), then you should go for it! This place books up really fast (even 18 months in advance for Spring and Summer).

    We had a great wedding reception at the Yorktown Freight Shed. We were allowed plenty of time to decorate and set up as well as a reasonable time frame to clean up and get out :-) The location does book up pretty far in advance for Saturday evenings but I think that is because the location is great and the price is very reasonable.

    The Yorktown Freight Shed is an beautiful venue for brides who are budget conscious or not into a typical hotel ballroom reception. For the price, you get tables, chairs, and a gorgeous view! During the summer season you also get to use the tent for free! That's an amazing value in itself.

    The Freight Shed Managers were always very quick to answer any emails or phone calls and had answers for any question I could think up. When we arrived to set up on our wedding day, everything was clean and all of the tables were as specified.

    Overall, I think the Freight Shed is an amazing deal and a beautiful venue! Though if I were having a larger wedding (we had about 70 guests and it was PERFECT) it would be a little bit too small.

    This review is only based on the planning process in having my wedding reception at the Freight Shed and my dealings with Sherman leading up to the event. Due to the hurricane, Yorktown was closed the weekend of my wedding and we had to move to a different venue, so we never actually got to have the event there :(

    The price for this location can't be beat, and the view is gorgeous. We were doing a Sunday afternoon wedding, so it is even cheaper, and that made it much easier to get our date since it really does book up a full year out.

    Sherman was easy to work with via email and he let us get the door code from him a few times to get inside on the weekends to meet with our caterer and wedding planner and work through the floorplan.

    Main issues are no white chairs unless you rent from an outside company, and there is a just a public restroom.

    Wish I had gotten my wedding there like I planned it, and I do recommend this location to others.

    The Freight Shed is the perfect wedding venue. We were married in a church but we had our reception there in July, it was a beautiful place and reasonable priced.

    The Freight Shed is a quaint venue for a DIY bride. My husband and I have professional event planning experience, which we definitely needed to pull this wedding off without a coordinator. Shed staff was easy to work with, our emails and phone calls were answered promptly and clearly; however, we had zero in-person interactions. We provided a floor plan two weeks prior to our reception and the furniture was placed for us. The Shed rules are fairly stringent and your access to the building is restricted, meaning you will be setting up centerpieces the morning of your wedding if you do not hire someone to do that. There is also an annoying lack of trash receptacles, which was a nuisance during the clean up. Note that because of the limited furniture availability at the Shed (which cannot be moved outside into the tented area), we had to rent a lot of equipment to transform the space into what we wanted, including cocktail tables, a DJ table, up-lighting, bar, etc. (which had to all be removed from the premise by 11 pm). We utilized all available outdoor chairs provided by the Shed and paid the county separately to have our ceremony on the lawn (the Shed will not set up the lawn chairs for you). Through our caterer we rented all of our linens, tableware, and glassware. We also applied for a liquor license from the state. Despite all of the additional costs we accrued, this was still more cost efficient than other country club packages in the area. It took a village to pull the wedding off, but we were delighted with the results as we were able to handpick every detail.

    This place was perfect for what we wanted and very affordable! It looks out onto the water and you have a brick area you can set up as well so people can go in and out. I as well would have another function there whenever the event presents itself! The biggest disappointment for us was our sunday wedding date (but to be honest,it turned out beyond perfect!). This place books up FAST! And I mean FAST! So book ahead! But all in all very nice place to have a reception!
