Affordable European Honeymoon

Sydney, on November 3, 2019 at 4:24 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 29
My fiancé and I have been dreaming about a luxury European honeymoon in the Amalfi Coast, French Riviera, or Greece, but it is SO expensive. Since we are living in Chicago, many flights leave from Ohare Airport, but they are not cheap. We are thinking of staying in Air BnB's or small family owned BnB's to make it cheaper, but it is starting to feel impossible due to the travel costs just to get there. Does anyone have ideas of under-rated, affordable places to travel in Europe? We heard Croatia and Portugal are nice, but are not sure its worth it for the little savings. All advice welcome! Thanks!

The Azores. So underrated. Not very touristy. Very inexpensive. We went for 2 weeks a couple years ago. Its a cluster of 9 islands off the coast of Portugal. We did 4/9 islands. If you like hiking and more nature type activities (hot springs, etc) this is your place.

Hi Anna! Thanks for that info, my fiancé and I were just looking at islands last night. Where did you guys fly into? Flights were pretty expensive to one of the islands and it stopped in Lisbon on the way. How did you guys get to the islands?

From my experience in searching, Barcelona, Spain & parts of Italy can be inexpensive. However, if you’re looking to go from country to country it’ll easily add up! If you just stick to one place it’ll cut costs. Even Greece I’ve found great deals on Expedia! Just make sure you’re choosing the bundle deals 😊

So if you’re date of wedding on your profile is correct, this pricing should be too! I chose you’d leave the day after your wedding, and you’d go for one week. This includes round trip flight + full week stay in hotel. It would leave from the airport you mentioned above! Also, what is your budget? Cause I didn’t see you mentioned that LOL

Maybe a little out there, but have you looked on Groupon or Costco? They normally have some good packages if you are willing to be a little flexible on the details! I’ve heard good things about both services for inexpensive vacations

Portugal is fabulous and prices are really reasonable for lodging and meals. The food and wine is great. The people are super welcoming. They have some of the most gorgeous beaches (check out Lagos and the surrounding areas). I loved Lisbon and Porto, a little gritty in places but I never felt unsafe, even traveling solo. I spent 2 weeks in Portugal in 2017 and would go back in a heart beat.

Greece can be pretty reasonable if you're not looking at Mykonos. You can find some decently priced lodging on Santorini if you're willing to stay outside of Oia. But there are lots of other gorgeous islands that are less expensive (Paxos, Naxos come to mind), and there is also a ton to see and do on the mainland.

We are hoping to be all in less than $5K for 2 weeks. Im not sure if this is a good amount or not. My research says that people pay like $4K per person for vacations like this, but all the forums say that you can do it cheaper.

Where would you suggest flying into and staying? We want a combo of historic/urban Europe and beautiful nature. What was your thoughts on the cuisine there?

Groupon doesn't seem to have as nice of things as Costco, but we are unfortunately not Costco members... maybe its worth it for the travel savings though! Thanks for the suggestion! (:

Have you worked with Expedia before? I am nervous to work with companies like this because I don't want to get stuck over paying for something that wasn't as good as it looked online. I dont travel much so I appreciate all the travel tips!

Looks like Barcelona will be one of the cheapest flights to Europe out of Chicago. Once in Europe you can travel for cheaper than flying directly from the US.

You could also fly to Paris for a little more and take a train to the French Riviera area.

I’ve been traveling for years and have primarily used Expedia! I’m leaving with FH for Australia in 2 days, and thanks to Expedia we got a good deal 🙌🏼 My FMIL travels nationwide a lot too, and also uses Expedia! So I’d deff recommend it 🤗 You will easily find plenty of options under 5k for 2 people! I would just suggest making sure when you do your search to ONLY search hotels with 4 stars & above + rating of 4.5 & above. This way you know you’re going to be staying in a nice place!

I’m from Canada and so we flew direct from Toronto - Ponta Delgada (was $498 roundtrip!!!). Theres only a few US cities that fly direct. Sorry maybe Chicago isnt one of them.

We booked our honeymoon from Nashville to Rome, Roundtrip flight and hotel was $1,881 total for 6 days. Go on Travelocity and play around with different packages.
