Cant pay for wedding that is only 40 days away!

Gabrielle, on August 22, 2019 at 4:57 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12
So my father was paying for our wedding and deposits have been payed, invitations are already out for delivery and now he cannot afford to pay for the rest of our expenses. My sister has multiple sclerosis and recently had to have surgery which left my dad with no choice but not going to work because he needs to be with her around the clock. She is confined to a wheelchair and cannot walk or even stand without assistance. What do I do?!

Can you and you FS cover the expenses?

If not, call you vendors and explain the situation. See if you can downgrade to get a better deal (maybe fewer choices or buffet instead of plated, less expensive rental, a shorter reception time, etc)

Are any vendors already paid in full? What vendors do you have booked (like a videographer isn’t a necessity so calling and cancelling may cost you your deposit but it won’t be an outstanding debt). How many guests do you have?

No they're all like half way paid off, with the final payments due within the next month. We have about 150 people.

I wouldn't normal advise going into debt for a wedding but at this point it may end up costing you more to cancel with all your vendors. After you have exhausted all efforts to downsize your contracts with your vendors is there a way you can use credit cards to pay for some of the bills or take a small personal loan to pay it off? It is not an ideal situation but this way you won't have to cancel.

I agree with this... how much is left to pay off? Do you, your dad, or your FH have any savings you can dip into??

To add to my other comment... realistically also you are probably going to get a lot of money back from your guests because a lot of people will write you checks/give you cash as gifts... of course that is NOT something you can generally expect or rely on when trying to figure out what you can afford lol, but at this point, depending on how much you have left to pay for, if you take out a small personal loan you may actually end up being able to pay it back quicker than you'd think because you can use the gift money you receive!

Only do this if you absolutely know you can pay off your debt in a timely manner but Paypal Credit lets you take 6 months to pay off before they tack on interest. Your credit limit depends on your credit score of course.
You can also use a credit card for last minute expenses.

Only run up that debt as much as you can comfortably AFFORD to pay off! Cut as much from your wedding as you can before you go this route because you’ll ruin your credit if you take on too much.

This is a nerve-wracking situation! I would suggest dipping into a savings account if you guys have one? How about your mom? Do you have a wedding party that can come together and help? I really would not encourage taking a loan! The last resort telling guests the wedding would be cancelled or only close relatives.. all maybe think about.... downsizing your vendors? For example, videographer, food, looking for cheaper options. Is it a whole lot that is owing?? It's so hard to give advice to something like this. I would feel bad about telling guests "Hey everyone, wedding's cancelled" or something like that, but if it was really that much money and it's impossible to pay, that may be something to unfortunately consider. I would really talk to some loved ones and see what can be done, since there's not much time till the wedding. I am PRAYING that things work out for you, and I am so sorry to hear about your sister. My heart is breaking for you. I wish I could have given more solid advice. Smiley heart

Downgrade as much as you are able to. Since you say you are starting a new job, I assume you will eventually have money coming in. I would probably put the expenses on a low interest credit card and then start paying it off as soon as you can. You can also put all wedding gift money towards paying it off.

Yeah I did speak to one of the vendors about simplifying our package but most of our other vendors are already a basic package. Thank you! Hopefully things work out
