Faux flowers, pros and cos for the different types

Allison, on August 21, 2019 at 7:13 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 13

Hi everyone!

I want to make my own certerpieces and bouquets and whatnot, but I don't want to be doing EVERYTHING the day before, so I'm looking at faux flowers, specifically the wooden ones and foam ones. I saw a few lists online of the pro's and con's of these but I'd like to hear from others who have used/are using them. Any tips, observations, suggestions and photos are super appreciated!

My idea is to have white roses with thistles for the bouquets and centerpieces, with the bridemaids having basically smaller versions of my bouquet. Not sure about greenery, but thats so inexpensive and minimal work I might just buy real stuff for that (not sure...)

I have until June 2022 (no actual date set, but that's about the time we're thinking) so I know I have time, but I don't want to waste any money on something that won't look nice...

Thank you all in advance!!!

-Allison

Edit: i just noticed the typo in the subject... ugh. ***"Pros and cons"****

I'm making all my flowers out of crepe paper (not the same, but I totally understand not wanting to have to put everything together the day before). I really liked being able to play around with the flowers and get everything exactly how I wanted them. And I've been able to slowly work on them over the last 9 months or so. I've seen fake flowers with real greenery and I think it looks really beautiful, so I'd definitely consider doing that.

    Thanks Sara!
I thought about making paper flowers, too, but knowing my own level of craftiness and how picky I can be (and how self-critical I am), I think it might be too much for me. Major kudos to you for taking that on!!!

And thank you for the insight on fake flowers/real greenery, that's definitely reassuring Smiley smile

I got my flowers (foam) from lings moments. I love them! Some of them came a little smushed, but the beauty of the foam is just a few passes with the hair dryer on low and they reshaped themselves beautifully! You can’t tell some of them were smushed! And they’re so real looking and pretty!!!

Oh wow! those are really pretty!!!
I had seen someone else say they dont look real because they're too perfect (not on this website, I don't think...) but I would rather they're "too perfect" than an obviously badly done fake flower.

and thank you so much for the hair dryer tip! One of my bigger concerns is damage during shipping, so knowing they're easily re-shaped is awesome.

    thanks!!!!

That was my concern too! I much preferred them looking perfect. The silk flowers at the craft stores all had frayed edges and I didn’t want to see that in my photos. Lings moments will also send you free samples so you can see exactly what the colors will look like in person!

I went with Sola Wood flowers.
    Pros:
    Fun to make
Pick EXACTLY the shades of colors you want
    They last forever/keepsake
They double as a gift for bridesmaids (which my BMs were thrilled about)

    Cons:
I really haven't found any. I have read some people mention they dont like the way they feel.... not really sure what they mean. They are very soft and flexible, almost like foam.
Actually, the one con I personally found was the time to make them. But I would do it again.

    Love your flowers!

I'm picking white flowers so that should be easy enough (maybe? lol)

I ordered a sample of 12 sola flowers, and I ordered a sample of different foam flowers, so once they get here I can check them out. I know no matter what kind i get, it's going to take some time to get them all together, but like you said, they last pretty much forever. If i can get a centerpiece done each month/every couple months, i'll probably have everything done well before i need them.

And since I'm giving away the centerpieces, the people that get them will be able to enjoy them a lot longer. Smiley smile

    Thanks for the info!!!

I used the Etsy shop Luv2DoItYourself
She was awesome, VERY helpful and for 1 box of 60 "RIP" flowers its only $20!
RIP flowers are ones she said had imperfections, although out of the 60 flowers, there were only 3 I found any flaws with.
I also purchased extra colors of "dye" and a kit for 1 bridal bouquet, 4 bridesmaids bouquets and 1 corsage. The total was $198. I also have about 40 flowers left over.

However, if your a budget bride, you could order a few of her RIP flowers and just buy the extra kit materials yourself. I wish I had done this.
The extra items in the "kit" are as follows:

Dye- The dye is just acrylic paint, $0.50 per bottle from walmart (I paid $6/bottle from her). Plus, you can pick the exact colors you want. If you want a more transparent look to your flowers use RIT dye. But since your doing white it should be super easy.

Floral Wire Stems- I bought extra of these from dollar tree and they worked great. 20 or 25 per bag.

Floral Tape- Also bought from dollar tree

Twine- 250 yards from dollar tree

I probably could have made exactly what I did for half the price.

Hi Allison, my wedding is next October and I’ll be doing a mix of faux and real flowers! I’ll be doing silk flowers for anything farther away (I.e. backdrop, flowers on the ground) and real flowers for my centerpieces.

Like many of you, I am a bride on a budget ($10k or less) and I am a control freak so I want everything to look good.

I’ve started making floral arrangements which I’ll attach below. I will be ordering my real flowers via fifty flowers and plan to assemble it two days before the wedding. There’s a lot to consider so I’ve been making lists and excel sheets via Google Drive (what a lifesaver!!).

My theme is modern tropical. I bought some flowers on sale at hobby lobby and some at Walmart.

I’ve been watching tons of YouTube videos and Pinteresting. I am artsy so it’s been so fun doing this!

When i was thinking of real flowers, i looked at fiftyflowers. i might still use them for the ones i keep real (thistles and greenery).

your centerpieces and backdrop bits look really good!!!

i'm not very artsy, but i am crafty, so i'm hoping that between youtube videos and pictures of things i like i'll be able to pull it off. with 2+ years to get it all done, i'm sure i'll figure something out lol

Hi! Every wedding I've been a part of, they used fake flowers for the bouquets. The pro of this is these bouquets last for FOREVER. It also depends on what you use for the flowers as to how much it's going to assemble. (I'm a bookworm, so my bouquet will be made up of book page flowers, so I know it will be tedious to make.) You can make bouquets super easy and way in advance though, and you won't have to worry about doing so much the day before or worry about the flowers wilting.
