Help me choose a cake flavor!

Danielle, on May 21, 2019 at 9:54 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 26

Y'all, I am struggling with this, and we are finalizing cake flavors tonight. We are getting a 5-tier semi naked cake with chocolate drizzle, fresh berries, and fresh flowers. And even though I love chocolate cake, we don't want the cake to be dark in color. That much I do know. The hard part is choosing the cake flavor/filling combos. I can choose a different flavor for each tier or do the entire thing one flavor. BUT I CAN'T DECIDE!!! It's a summer wedding, so I'm thinking "light & fresh." Something like berries, fruit filling, cream, etc. We are not using fondant...because, gross. So, I know it'll be buttercream. But again, there are different flavors of buttercream that can be chosen. I'm leaning towards vanilla cake with strawberry filling (like strawberry shortcake). But I also like: keylime pie, banana, raspberry, lemon, etc. I just really want my cake to be a WOW factor! HELP!! What flavor combo would you pick? Any suggestions? What would make you happy as a guest? Literally any input can help me at this point, lol. TIA

We are having a three tier cake with buttercream frosting and chose two different flavors. One is classic vanilla cake with bavarian cream filling and then the other is white amaretto cake with raspberry filling. Vanilla cake with strawberry filling sounds delicious and classic! You could try something a little more unique for the other options - I am personally always a fan of anything lemon or raspberry! Maybe try something with those? They are very summer to me and would go well with strawberry for a fruity themed cake!

You can do different flavors for different layers, that’s what I want to do. Unless the place that you are getting it from doesn’t allow it. You can even have the top smallest tier be chocolate. It won’t stand out too much if you are worried. Lemon raspberry together is a delicious combination. Lemon buttercream mixed with lemon jam or whipped cream. Very light. I’ve personally never had a key lime cake so I’m not help with that.

We are doing cupcakes - a lemon one, strawberry shortcake, smores, and PB&J. I felt like they were all fun summer flavors. I would definitely stick to lighter options like you said. I think lemon and raspberry would be really good! I also love strawberry shortcake so I think that is a great idea too.

Did you try the different flavors? I know when we did our cake tasting, fillings that I thought would be delicious weren't that great. We went with chocolate cake with strawberry filling, and it will have vanilla buttercream. If your cake is only semi-naked, the chocolate shouldn't look to dark because of the white buttercream.

With such a large cake I’d choose 2-3 flavors! Two light summer flavors and one chocolate because a lot of guests love chocolate (are you doing a naked cake? The cake color doesn’t show through regular frosting). What about:

    1) vanilla cake + strawberry filling
    2) lemon cake with cream cheese filling, or carrot cake with cream cheese frosting
    3) chocolate cake with a coffee or hazelnut filling, or a red velvet cake with chocolate filling

Does your baker offer a tasting? That’s the best way to decide! For our one-tier cake we chose white cake with two layers Bavarian cream & one layer spiced baked apples—that combo was amazing.

Maybe a bananas foster with banana and caramel. S’mores cake with spice cake and chocolate filling and marshmallow buttercream. Lemonade cake with raspberry buttercream or strawberry. Something a little different would be vanilla and blueberry cardamom or thyme with white chocolate buttercream.

We we are doing a grapefruit & thyme cake with passionfruit/guava buttercream and a second cake with orange poppyseed and raspberry buttercream - with shoofly, traditional and jalapeño lopeno vanilla whoopie pies.

We have a 3 tier cake we chose 2 flavors lemon for our top and bottom tiers and pink champagne for our middle tier. I love lemon cake, it literally made me cry when I tasted it.
    You could do⬇️
    vanilla and strawberry,
lemon and raspberry berry pair well together so I would do lemon cake with a raspberry filling
After looking online key lime and banana go together.

Just a thought hope this helps, best wishes.

I would deff. do vanilla cake with the strawberries and raspberries, maybe lemon too but banana and key lime aren't too popular (in my area anyways, you don't see too much of that) so I feel like that would not really get eaten. Go with the buttercream and maybe add a flavor to the chocolate drizzle (like bourbon or Whiskey). That's just my opinion lol. We are doing donuts for guests and a cake to cut. I'm not a frosting fan so we are doing one of those half frosted cakes (see pic) with buttercream and with vanilla or fun fetti cake and the chocolate drizzle will be some kind of alcohol flavor. My mom and I are making it too. Smiley smile

Help me choose a cake flavor! 1

That is a "semi-naked" cake, which is what we will be doing. I love the look of it. I never even thought about adding an alcohol flavor to the chocolate drizzle, thanks for the tip.

I think I can choose 2 flavors with my cake (inclusive venue). One will definitely be banana, so my vote is for banana lol.

I am doing a semi-naked cake. We did a tasting with her, but she only gave us a few cake flavors to try..no fillings. And she hasn't been the easiest to get in touch with. I tried to order some flavor combos from her, but she wouldn't respond. So, we are meeting with her tonight to finalize flavors, but I hate doing it without trying different combos.

OH! Haha I did not know that's what that was! In my head I was thinking semi-naked meant like all white no decorative swirly things or anything on the cake, just white cake, white frosting Smiley xd

I wouldn’t vote for any of those options except lemon or maybe banana as I hate fruit in cakes. We have our tasting in 2 weeks and will be tasting vanilla, chocolate, banana, Reese’s and cannoli.

Lemon and blueberry or raspberry I think is a classic summery flavor combo! I am doing lemon cake and blueberry filling for one of my tiers. I just think it's so fresh! We are doing strawberry swirl cake with vanilla buttercream and classic vanilla/vanilla as well. Can't go wrong with vanilla and strawberry as you said for strawberry shortcake either!

I'm a super simple kind of cake person. So all these choices are overwhelming to me. I'd probably just go with your original strawberry and vanilla idea.
