Worried; Awful Experience with Mua/hair Stylist

Jenna, on June 16, 2019 at 3:29 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 12

I know this might seem like a 'weird' thing to be worried about but...

I'm a plus size bride, and of all things I am worried about finding a MUA & Hair stylist who isn't well.. Judgmental. My fears are based on a personal experience I had several years ago during my mother's wedding. My mother, my half-sister, and myself went to a makeup artist to get dolled up for the day. the make up artist fawned over my (fit) half sister, but when she got to my mother she started making rude comments about how she looked. She was really subtle with my mom, but when she got to me, she visibly grimaced and said that I don't look very good, and that I don't look like I'm even related to my mom and half-sister. She even went as far as to say something like "well clearly [sister's name] is the beauty of the family".
The whole experience was incredibly awkward, and I felt so humiliated I was almost in tears.

There have been a few run ins more recently with other vendors at a bridal expo.... I was with my bridal party, and despite wearing something that said 'bride' on it in plain view, the vendor went to one of my party members to say 'congratulations on your engagement'... And when they were told I was the bride, they looked me up and down, and seemed disappointed/surprised.

So now I'm really worried about finding a MUA/hair stylist who won't grimace or treat me differently just because I'm not conventionally beautiful. I know that some might say that it only matters that my fiance loves me (and he does), but after that really big bad experience, and a few other small negative experience, it's hard not to get down on myself or worry. Smiley atonished I don't want to give my business to someone who will put a damper on my day.... Has anyone else had similar experiences? I'd like to know I'm not alone...

I want to start by saying that I am sorry that this happened to you. Nobody should make you feel less than or have put you down in anyway. I think that that makeup artist obviously isn’t very good at her job. Her job was to make everyone feel beautiful. My makeup artist is very sweet and kind so I didn’t have any problems with her and I hope that you won’t have problems with whoever you find. I am also hoping that that makeup experience was an isolated incident. You are beautiful! Don’t let anyone else make you other wise.

Thank you Madison, it means alot for you to say that.

I am also hoping it was just one of those 'one-off' situations...

I'm so sorry you had that experience nobody should be made to feel like that.
Take your time with finding the right mua. You dont have to hire the first one you meet. Remember you are paying for this service and you should not settle for anything less. They are there to make you look and feel beauitful and if they cant do that they arent the right one for the job so on to the next one. The first sign of pettiness tell them good bye this is your day your choice.

I think it's important that you find someone you're comfortable with. I'm sorry people were rude to you. I would have been apt to tell those people, if I were in your situation, that they may not think I'm pretty, but they're ugly inside. :-)

Agreed. I am nice until people are rude first. Then I can state my mind.

Oh my goodness! Who do they even think they are!?!? I am so sorry that those people made you feel that way. Not everyone is a bitter human being like those who you have had experiences with. I would suggest to look around for different artists. I have a feeling that you will be surprised with who you might find. You got this!

I’m appalled to hear that there are people in the world that would treat someone that way! I would go on an interview spree and find someone that you feel good about and will make you feel special on your big day. Chin up and smile confidently!

This makes me absolutely angry. Your beauty is just that’s YOURS. The term conventional beauty makes me cringe. Talk and walk with confidence and make people respect you. That MUA should be ashamed of herself! Please don’t let this make you hesitant to hire someone. Definitely research multiple ones and “interview” them and go with the one that makes you feel absolutely comfortable. I’m so sorry you had to go through that. Nobody deserves that! I hope you left a review detailing that experience. She should be banned from having customers. Ridiculous! I wish you all the best and hope you find someone that will make you feel absolutely beautiful as you are on your day!

I went to my first bridal appointment and there was only 1 dress in the store that would fit me. To be fair, this store only had about 50 dresses in stock, and I would have had a disappointing experience even if I were thin. The lady who owned the store sat down with us and basically made it sound like I had one option for companies I could buy a gown from...
I called two other bridal stores 2 hours away and then felt the need to ask if they even had anything in my size in store before scheduling the appointments. (They did.)

I just try to remember that my fiance (and his entire family) think I'm freakin' gorgeous and go on with my life.
