1 Jun, 2019The story of our wedding
Our wedding took place in between where me and Dan's families live. It happened in a gorgeous venue in Iowa and was very romantic! The venue is Steeple Square which used to be a Catholic church, but is now an event center. Me and my bridesmaids started the day getting our hair and make up done in Fringe Salon in Dubuque. It was a blast and they took such good care of all of us!
The wedding didn't start until 5:30, so we were able to have a relaxed day. Us girls went back to our air b&b for breakfast and a dance party in our pjs! We arrived at Steeple Square to start pictures at 2pm. I put my dress on and headed out to a local spot down the street for the first look with Dan. We wrote each other letters and it was very sweet. We got our pictures together and with our bridal party before heading back to the venue to take pictures with our families.
My grandpa was able to come to the wedding which was one of the most special parts of the day. He has ALS and has unfortunately deteriorated immensely. My aunts and uncles helped to get him there and it meant the world. After those pictures, the bridal party hid in the venue's event coordinator's office until it was showtime! My little cousins handed out all the programs and greeted the guests. I was a very DIY bride and designed all the invitations, programs, and signage for the wedding. So it was all a lot of work!
Continue reading »The ceremony started with a slideshow of me and my fiance from babies to adults. My family friends play cello, violin, and harp, so they did all the music for the ceremony. It added a great sense of elegance to the wedding. After the slideshow ended, the bridal party made their procession down the aisle. The flower girl remembered halfway down about the flowers and proceeded to dump the entire basket of petals on the ground! Then she just stood there as the ring bearer tried to pull her arm to get her to keep walking. It was great! Then, I walked down the aisle with my dad on my left arm and my uncle on my right. The ceremony was very sweet and beautiful (Except when I couldn't remember my lines for the vows!!) The recessional grand piano piece was played by my pianist cousin as my husband and I exited the building.
We had a catered meal of Mediterranean chicken, roast beef, party potatoes, green beans, Caesar salad, and dinner rolls. We also had Chick-fil-a lemonade for our drinks! It was a beautiful reception full of pictures at the photo booth, mingling with friends and family, and speeches from our loved ones (I only cried once!).
At the end of the reception, the bridal party started handing out something fun for the guests. It was our reception exit. Everyone lined up outside and proceeded to light Chinese lanterns! I attached strings to the lanterns so we wouldn't litter them into the city. The doors were opened for me and Dan and we walked out surrounded by Chinese lanterns in the sky! Some were a bit deffective and were collapsing in flames, but that just added to how great and hilarious it all was! Dan and I drove away in our getaway truck and talked about how perfect the day was. We couldn't have asked for anything better. All the planning was worth it!
