29 Sep, 2018The story of our wedding
Galen and I met in September 2015. Through a crazy connection: I played soccer at LSU. One of his friends was a professor at LSU who taught one onf my former teammates. She reached out because the guys play on a co-ed soccer team at a huge tournament in Asheville, NC every year. Its called Beer City Cup. I agreed to guest play (not knowing anyone!) because I only lived about an hour away in Greenville, SC.
After meeting and btoh scoring goals the first day--that was that! We realized there was a crazy connection. The weekend after the tournament, I drove to Louisville, KY where he lived to visit him. We went on what felt like 15 first dates in a crammed-full weekend! After that, the 7 hour drives back and forth between Louisville and Greenville, S.C. started!
The distance was tough, but my first gift from him was a set of 52 letters for each week of the year to help me start my weeks off as if he was there! I will cherish them forever. We wanted to incorporate a lot of this into our wedding.
Continue reading »We ended up getting engaged at the same tournament two years later and decided to have the wedding in the same area the following year. Some of our neat features were highlighting different local breweries with brewery glasses for each wedding guest, a soccer tournament bracket “seeding” chart for seats, and Brew and Bubbly Cake Pushpops made with local beer and champagne by Sugar Cloud Bakery. We had cut outs of our faces as children and as adults as props for the photobooth which people had a blast with. Because we live in Louisvilly, KY, our signature cocktail was a “Lilly” drink which is the drink of the Kentucky Oaks race the day before Derby. Galen is a big Seattle Sounders soccer fan so I got his garter specially made with blue and green Sounders colors and a little charm on it.
We are both sports fans and we included custom-made cornhole boards for the guests to play on. One was an LSU Tigers board and the other was a University of Washington Huskies board. (his alma mater) People had a blast with these. We did an awesome job of keeping our wedding super affordable by making centerpieces, painting wooden signs, corn hole boards and getting donated brewery glasses for wedding favors!
The dance party was insane. Our guy friends all acted like they were going to catch the garter but they let it fall to floor and danced all around it because they were afraid to pick it up. I was dying laughing! We closed the night with “Its All Coming Back to Me Now” by Celine Dion and the entire place was singing to it. It was amazing.
All in all--The rustic/mountaint wedding was a blsat that had "Galen and Alex" written all over it. It brought his family from the West Coast to a city that they ended up falling in love with too!
